After our adventures in Guyana we stopped over in Suriname for another week of lazying. The well-known hotel Torarica was a treat, just as shoe shopping for some Brazilian heals and chilling at Palmentuin (open again after deadly tree-falling incident). Uncle Eugene and Aunt Ursi took us on a daytrip to New Amsterdam where we walked through the open-air museum and old jail. It wasn’t the last jail cell we would see from the inside!

O yes, I was right. It took foreeeeeeeever to get to Kaieteur Falls, the tallest single drop waterfall in the world (251 meters). Brian loves doing things the hard way so we tried to get to the falls by ourselves, without a guide …and…without a clue of what was ahead. Continue reading →

We hiked to Jordan Falls, some unexpectedly massive waterfall hidden deep in the Kanuku jungle. Joe and Kenneth, our two Amerindian guides, made sure we didn’t trample snakes and pointed out every hummingbird that zoomed passed. Continue reading →

It’s dusty, hot and there are Amerindian cowboys everywhere. It’s a complete change of scenery. From hectic, smelly but beautiful Georgetown to here: Lethem, on the Brazilian border. We passed through jungle, the Owikrama Rainforest and the Rupununi Savannah to get here. An 18 hour drive in a mini-bus taxi, through the middle of the night. We stopped at 5 police stations (once in every district, so they know who is on the road), waited 2 hours for a ferry and had a blown out tire. But it was all worth it.

We’re currently in Georgetown, which does not live up to its reputation of being a dangerous city. Its Carribean, very modern and hot.

Brian just bought tickets for a bus to Lethem, the annual Easter Rodeo in the Rupununi Savannah is our next stop.
